Trivia Night
MASS’s first major event in Semester 1 brings along both sponsors and students in a casual atmosphere as they combine into teams and tackle some trivia. Trivia Night is the perfect chance for students of all year levels to network with representatives from firms in the actuarial industry. Furthermore, it is a fantastic opportunity for students to establish strong connections and meet other members. Learn more about the career, or just come along for a fun night of trivia and food in a beautiful city venue.
Event Reviews:
“Based on my personal experience, Trivia Night was one of the most fun events I’ve attended this year. The vibes were great, with a cozy atmosphere that still had a competitive edge, as every table aimed to win the gift card prize. Our team, “The Winning Team,” put in a solid effort and ended up placing 4th (we were robbed, of course). The energy at our table was high and we were laughing the whole time, enjoying the moment while still staying focused on each question. There was also plenty of friendly banter between us and the actual winning team, “Infinity,” who finished the night with a high score of 54 points. One of the biggest highlights for me was meeting the new first-year subcommittee for the first time. They all made an effort to introduce themselves and engage in conversation, which left a really great first impression. Another highlight was the ongoing banter between our table and “Infinity,” made even better by the fact that our friends Adrian and Ryan were on their team. It definitely made the night more entertaining and fun. Overall, the event struck the perfect balance between competition, humour, socialising, and making new connections. It was a great success, and I’m already looking forward to the next one.”
Corporate Cocktails
MASS’s main networking event now incorporated our unique “speed dating” element ensuring sponsors are able to engage with all our brilliant members. This opportune chance for sponsors to scout for talent, and an opportunity for MASS members to seek inspiration from their experienced peers and to learn from the best in the field. Members can mingle with representatives from major firms in the actuarial industry over canapés and drinks in a relaxed professional setting. The night features an inspirational keynote speech delivered by an experienced actuary. Members can learn more about the actuarial field, the skills needed for success, and the expectations of hiring firms.
Event Review:
“Attending the corporate cocktail networking event was truly a memorable experience. From the moment people started to come, the energy in the room was contagious. The venue was thoughtfully arranged to encourage natural interaction, with plenty of open spaces and cozy lounges where people could mingle. I was immediately struck by how easy it was to start conversations and connect with others, and the vibe was a perfect blend of professional and approachable. One moment that really stood out for me was when everyone was able to freely talk to each other and express their innovation in the corporate world. The insights shared were eye-opening, and the sponsors storytelling made complex concepts feel relatable and exciting. You could feel the collective energy in the room as people nodded along and exchanged thoughts about how these innovations might apply to each other’s industries. Another highlight for me was the networking moments. The event had allowed us to connect each other on LinkedIn, which would help meet people and companies that were aligned with the same interests and goals that might help with career knowledge. It made the whole networking process so much more intentional and valuable, rather than staying home and doing nothing. Overall, the event was a fantastic mix of inspiration, learning, and genuine connection. I walked away with new ideas, new contacts, and a fresh perspective on where the future of business is headed.”
Q&A Panel
This year’s Actuarial Q&A Panel hosted in collaboration with the University of Melbourne proved to be another standout event, which included sponsors from Finity, IAG, KPMG and Mercer. Throughout the discussion, prospective actuarial students from both Melbourne and Monash University learnt more about life in the actuarial consulting and insurance fields. The session opened with each panelist sharing their unique journeys into becoming an actuary, whether they were a graduate who took a more traditional approach to those that explored other pathways before settling into actuarial science. Students were given a first-hand look into the roles that each sponsor played within their respective organisations, including some insight into their most fulfilling projects. Some key topics discussed by the panelists included their day-to-day responsibilities, work-life balance, as well as the future of the actuarial profession in an AI-driven world. The attendees then had the opportunity to pose their own questions to the sponsors, taking the chance to further build upon the discussions about the prevalence of AI, in addition to other relevant questions about life as an actuary. Following the formal panel, students had the opportunity to speak to the panelists over refreshments provided by the University of Melbourne, facilitating open conversations tailored to their own aspirations. Students seized the opportunity to network with the sponsors and receive advice on navigating life as an actuarial scientist, as well as facing the possible challenges they may encounter along the way. The relaxing atmosphere led to the night concluding with meaningful conversations and laughter, leaving students inspired, informed, and more confident in their career direction towards becoming an actuarial scientist.
Women in Actuarial & Econometrics
MASS is proud to partner with Monash Business School to present the Women in Actuarial and Econometrics night. This is a corporate cocktails-style night for female students, staff, alumni and industry professionals aimed at creating a support network and fostering empowerment. Important topics regarding issues with women in the modern-day workforce and the actuarial field are discussed. This gives our female members the opportunity to engage with and learn from role models in the industry.
Poker Night
MASS’s final event of the year provides a night of poker for members and sponsors to interact in a casual setting. Members are able to apply risk management, analytical and probability skills in a different setting outside of the classroom. Professional dealers and poker equipment are provided as well as finger food and drinks. There are many prizes to be won and players of all skill levels are welcome.
